Plantar Fasciitis And Cortisone May 31, 2007

I called my coach this week. We determined that since I have taken 5 weeks off of running now, and my plantar is not completely gone, that I should go ahead and get a cortisone shot. I have had one in the past, and my doctor prefers not to give them. But, if the injury continues to be chronic, as mine has, and then it is a good form of treatment.

I saw DR Mari Adad yesterday and told him about my hope to run the Boston Marathon in 2008.

Memorial Day Ride May 29, 2007

Well, you couldn’t ask for a nicer day. We got up early to do The 7 Hills of Kirkland Course. We rode 5 miles down to the Burke-Gilman Trail and there were already tons of riders getting an early start.

My brother in law doesn’t come up from Portland very often and he was eager to put in some miles. We decided to change our course and ride around Lake Washington instead. I haven’t ridden more that 30 miles outside this year. I’ve also only been out on my bike about 5 times now.

What the heck! What’s 58 miles off of nothing? I’m doubling my latest effort and I don’t have enought cliff bars in my camel back to support the ride. I’ll go burn some calories and lose a couple of pounds right?

The ride was perfect, except for the last 8 miles or so. We had to stop and stretch before we rode the last 5 miles up the hill. I burned 1300 calories, which I made up for by eating chicken fajitas at Azteca. So much for losing a couple of pounds!

Hilly Ride May 26, 2007

I set out to do a hilly ride almost 3 weeks ago. My goal was to get in a hilly ride before I did the 7 Hills course with my group on May 12th. I abandoned my orginal course on May 8th, knowing that if I rode the whole course, I wouldn’t feel recovered enough to ride the 7 Hills course on May 12th.

Today I got up and rode the 23 mile course that I had originally intended. My brother in law is visiting from Portland, and wanted to get in a couple of hilly rides over the weekend. So, the two of us got out there at 7 am this morning, to beat the crowds.

I am keeping my fingers crossed! I talked to my coach today and she suggested going out for a run to see how my heel is doing. I went for an easy run on the Burke-Gilman Trail. I stayed on the grass or gravel and avoided the pavement.

Plantar Fasciitis Update May 22, 2007

I have committed to taking the month of May off running in order to rid myself of this evil plantar fasciitis. I’ve been suffering since September. If you’ve been following my blog you know I’ve tried decreasing mileage, massage, ice stretching, orthodics, everything short of drugs!

Well, I have used ibuprofen, which is a drug. But, I haven’t taken the next step of getting a cortizone shot. I’ve had one before and they are really painful. I’m saving cortizone for the last resort.

It’s been 4 weeks this Thursday, since I last ran…..more….

Can Oatmeal Really Help Me Lose Weight? May 16, 2007

 Magical Oats

Oats are high in soluable fiber.  What that means is that oatmeal acts like a sponge which absorbs cholesterol and removes it from your system.  3 grams of fiber has been shown to reduce cholesterol, specifically LDL, which is low density cholesterol.  This equates to about 1 1/2 cups of oatmeal a day.  RDA recommends 5-10 grams of soluable fiber every day. 20-35 grams total.

Cycling 7 Hills Course May 13, 2007

I ogranized a group of riders to take on the 7 Hills of Kirkland course. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, riding with this group. The group consisted of Steve, Eric, Dave, Brad, Tina and myself. Steve(legs of steel) is one of my clients who is a great cyclist and has done the STP every year for the last 22 years (one day). Spin Class Eric is a cyclist who became a spin instructor and typically cruises through the Snowqualmie Valley at speeds that exceed 22 miles per hour. I used to work with Eric at BPC. I tried riding with Eric’s group last Summer for Flying Wheels Century. I was quickly dropped from the peleton. Ironman Dave is a fitness trainer who has completed 7 Ironman events. Ironman Brad has been riding a few years now and takes to cycling, like a fish to water. He was able to ride the course in a fixed gear bike. Then there is Tina who did some track work outs with my running groups a couple of years ago. She is very fit after spending lots of time in Eric’s spin class.

I knew it was going to be a tough ride for me. …more…

I have been struggling with Plantar Fasciitis since September. I should’ve cut back on running when I had the original flare up. But, I had signed up for a half-marathon in Las Vegas and had already bought my ticket etc. I don’t usually back down from challenges. I don’t like to back out of races, it’s just not my style. This ability to perservere has helped me with running.

This time, my ability to push myself and ignore pain, has ultimately caused me more pain. Sometimes I am my own worst enemy. I didn’t listen to my body back in September. That mistake has cost me 8 months of not being able to run without pain.

I stopped by Gregg’s Cycle to pick up a speedometer for my bike.  My old one doesn’t work, and rather than send the whole thing back to Polar, I bought a new one.  Polar must make a lot of money off people like me who can’t be without their heart rate monitors!

We put in a 35 mile ride on Saturday, all flat on the Burke-Gilman trail.  I literally had to dust my bike off.  I haven’t been on it since September of last year.  This is embarrassing to admit, but I couldn’t even find my bike in the garage.  Last Summer my brother in law did a lot of work on our house.  We replaced carpets and had to move everything out to the garage.  There is still a ton of junk out there!
